On behalf of the Economic Development Committee, I want to thank
the town and its residents and visitors for your support of the 1st
Annual Celebrate Sterling on Saturday, June 1. What began as the
glimmer of an idea and the hope for participation of a few groups, grew
within a mere three weeks to a town-wide event that included over 30
organizations, 20 local businesses, live music, a craft fair, and
events throughout the town.
Thanks to all the participants that came up with displays,
demonstrations, and crowd-pleasing entertainment within just a few
days. I am grateful beyond words for the support and assistance of the
Board of Selectmen, former selectman Rich Lane, Town Administrator Ross
Perry, Town Planner Domenica Tatasciore, Town Clerk Barbara Bartlett
and Executive Assistant Kama Jayne. Your trust was the fuel that kept
this engine humming, and your good humor made the stressful moments
less so.
Thanks to Police Chief Gary Chamberland who worked tirelessly to
accommodate the traffic control and parking requests of several groups
in town, and to his dedicated officers for making the event safe and
trouble-free for all. Thanks to Fire Chief David Hurlbut whose team is
always on hand to provide emergency services in times of need. You all
make our town feel safe and secure.
I also want to acknowledge the exceptional volunteer efforts of
Jennifer Mason, Susan Joy Fields, Julia Fields, Dave Clark, Maureen
Cranson, Rosanne Mapp, and Eric Thomas. Without your energy and
expertise, this would indeed have remained the mere glimmer of an idea.
And, most of all, thanks to all who came out to enjoy the
wonderful weather and festive atmosphere. I am already looking forward
to the 2nd Annual Celebrate Sterling!

Save the Date to Celebrate Sterling
by Chris Kyne
At their meeting on May 1, the Sterling Board of Selectmen unanimously
gave the go-ahead to move forward with a town-wide "Celebrate Sterling"
event which will be held on Saturday, June 1 (rain date Saturday, June
8). The celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Town
Common.
The purpose of the event will be to bring town residents, businesses,
farms, and visitors together to showcase the town and its many
attractions. The afternoon will feature live music from several musical
groups, a food truck, fire and police demonstrations, a hay ride, local
farm tours, and craft vendors and demonstrations. Sterling
Lancaster Community Television will also be on site, offering tours of
their new truck, and offering kids a chance to conduct live interviews
from the event.
Lex Thomas, who owns Lex
Thomas Communications, is coordinating the
event. She said she hopes the event will be a celebration of
everything Sterling has to offer.
"This pushes Sterling in the right direction and we’re talking here
about civic pride," Thomas says. "We’ve got a great town and we
want to make it not only a destination for people that are driving
through, but a place where people who live here can say, hey, this is
going on this weekend, let’s do this."
In addition, many of the local businesses downtown will have their
doors open during "Celebrate Sterling," encouraging both residents and
visitors to see everything they have to offer. Encouraging and
supporting business growth is an important part of "Celebrate Sterling"
as well moving the town’s master planning process forward.
"There’s so much happening in Sterling right now and a very important
part of this is our business community," Thomas says. "It’s important
to set something up that gives the business community support and also
encourages growth of business in Sterling, while providing a fun
experience for residents and families."
